A strong and naturally bushy multi-stemmed shrub with a rounded crown. The young brown shoots are lightly hairy, but the older bark peels off easily over time, giving the shrub additional texture.
The matte green leaves turn brownish-yellow in autumn. The graceful male flowers appear already in winter and open around the end of February or March, followed by small, inconspicuous red female flowers and delicious hazelnuts, rich in oils and proteins, ripen in autumn. Grows best in airy, well-drained soil, although the common hazel is adaptable to a variety of garden conditions.
