An impressive tree. This hardy maple forms a dense crown with widely spreading branches. The red-violet buds open as large, opposite leaves with slightly serrated edges, while the greenish-yellow flowers bloom before the foliage. In autumn, the foliage sometimes turns a particularly bright golden yellow. The common maple has a strong, finely branched root system, grows well in a variety of places, but does not tolerate too wet or peaty soil.
