GARDEN OF THE ARTISTS' RESIDENCE
YEAR: 2021
PLACE: JŪRMALA
AREA: 1200 M2
DESIGN: SINTIJA NAGLE, ANSIS BIRZNIEKS
The garden is designed for the Pāvilosta Artist in Residency, where creative individuals find inspiration, where artists collaborate with local residents and enthusiasts, and where contemporary art is displayed against a natural canvas.
Garden within a Garden – The artist residency garden is publicly accessible to any interested visitor. However, it is also a space where artists come to develop their creative projects and thus require privacy and uninterrupted peace. To address this need, flowering, airy, and substantial perennial islands create a dense "curtain" near the garden's exit, enclosing the wooden lounging terrace and several small, secluded areas.
Here, artists can freely and privately enjoy breakfast at a communal table or find a quiet corner under the shade of a large willow. Additionally, a greenhouse serves as a functional divider, available to both residency occupants and local residents, and is integrated into the planting scheme.
This private artist space is not physically enclosed—it is connected to the rest of the garden by fine, loose-surface paths. However, roundwood fence segments meander through the garden, psychologically separating, highlighting, or demarcating the transition between zones.
The Open Garden – The expansive planting beds, while creating a visual barrier to the private area, remain beautifully seasonal and inviting to anyone who comes to enjoy the space and events in the more accessible garden areas. Mown grass paths meander around the territory, while art elements are showcased in the unmown islands.
Scattered throughout are also small grass clearings with a bench or two, offering spots to relax and savor the moments. Meanwhile, the large lawn area between the Residence and the Shed building serves as a true epicenter for gathering and interaction. Adjacent to this central meeting point, a fire pit has been thoughtfully placed, warmly inviting visitors to gather around and enjoy the crackling fire and the scent of burning wood.
A garden bathed in sunlight, lightness, and creative energy, it delights anyone whostaying to Pāvilosta and visits the Artist Residence.
