ENDLESS SUMMER

YEAR: 2019-2022

LOCATION: JURMALA

AREA: 2000 M2

DESIGN: MĀRTIŅŠ RŪTENBERGS, ANSIS BIRZNIEKS

The heart of the garden is a reconstructed historical gem of Jūrmala’s architecture – a wooden summer house adorned with intricate wooden lace decorations, complemented by an elegant, modern extension. The building's volume seamlessly blends with the surrounding pine forest, creating a harmonious landscape.

To highlight the unique architecture of the property, the garden has been designed with restraint and nuance, emphasizing the refined details of the building. At the same time, it is adapted to the rhythm of contemporary life, offering both spaciousness and tranquility, as well as areas for relaxation, children's play, a fire pit, and a small, fragrant herb garden.

The garden design playfully accentuates the contrast between the historic and modern parts of the building, reflected in both the choice of paving materials and plantings. Around the historic section, narrow-format concrete pavers are laid in a delicate herringbone pattern, reminiscent of aristocratic parquet. Meanwhile, the extension is surrounded by minimalist concrete slabs – a modern and functional solution.

The contemporary extension serves as an additional living area with an open terrace at the back of the house. The terrace is enclosed by perennial flower beds, enhanced with multi-stemmed trees and a few berry bushes, creating a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere. A small herb garden with raised beds, particularly loved by children, is located nearby.

The plantings are designed to be light and airy, incorporating some architectural accents such as a decorative apple tree alley, clusters of hydrangeas, and sections of clipped hedges that give the garden structure, order, and elegance. A shaded garden area with rhododendrons and nostalgic plant compositions from a "Grandmother’s Garden" adds a touch of warmth and sentimental charm.

A dedicated play area has been seamlessly integrated into the landscape – a discreetly placed trampoline that preserves the visual aesthetics of the garden. Though at first glance the garden appears open and expansive, it also holds a secret – next to the house, right by the study, a small terrace with a private exit is tucked away, providing an intimate and peaceful retreat from the daily bustle.

This garden is not just a beautifully designed outdoor space but an extension of the living environment, where past elegance meets modern comfort. It is a place to enjoy the closeness of nature, unhurried conversations, and the small joys of everyday life, allowing the home and garden to breathe as one.
